The Art Of Sandcasting

The Art Of Sandcasting

Sandcasting is an ancient metal working technique that has become a firm favourite at Kiri and Shore. First a mould is made with a casting clay/sand, then a ring blank, pendant, a shell or other object is pressed into this to complete the mould. Most moulds here at Kiri and Shore then have beach sand sprinkled into them. Molten metal is poured into the mould and as it solidifies it captures the texture of the sand. Unlike modern manufacturing methods that strive for perfect uniformity, sandcasting embraces the beauty of natural variation.
The result is jewellery with a character of its own. Soft textures. Organic surfaces. Tiny imperfections that tell the story of how each piece was made.

Why I Use Sand

Over the years I have collected sand from beaches around the world. Some sands I have collected on my own travels, some have been gifted to me from friends, and others are given to me by customers from a place that holds special meaning to them. A childhood beach, a favourite holiday destination, the place you got engaged or the shoreline you visit when life feels overwhelming.

No Two Pieces Are Ever Identical

As sand is a natural element, every cast is slightly different. Each beach sand has its own texture, grain size and character. When used in the mould making process these subtle differences leave different marks on the metal. Each piece carries its own unique imprint.

You can send me your own special sand by getting in touch, or shop one of the made to order or ready to ship pieces.
